From SATA-Peru-2007

After settling into my room, which was shared with Hayley and Kerry, we discovered that not only were we extremely hungry but our beds were more than uncomfortably moist. After writhing around in my bed for about twenty-minutes I decided sleeping in my sleeping bag would be best, and indeed it was. The next morning Hayley woke up with wet hair from the shower she took the night before and Kerry couldn’t stop talking about breakfast. Even with these few setbacks, we were all overly excited to be in Peru! As we entered the elaborately decorated restaurant attached to the hotel we were hoping for huevos con queso, café con leche, and jugo de naranja. We received all the liquids but none of the sustenance. Apparently, there was a little miscommunication and the servers thought we had already had breakfast and furthermore the room we were sitting in was the conference room in the restaurant and in this room, food was not allowed. But, like true rallyers (yes, that’s a made up word), we let our stomachs growl, we chewed some coca and proceeded to the Lima airport only eight hours since we had last been there.

After being told that a ticket didn’t exist for me on our flight to Cusco, I knew I was in for some major adventure. Lizarralde had an extra river pack which he strategically packed me in using bungee cords and the provided “fragile” stickers at the airport. I heard from my other classmates that the flight was beyond incredible and all I could take away from the flight was the rancid smell of stale water and old socks from the river bag.

Alas, we arrived in Cusco, fresh thin air blowing in our hair and feeling like superheroes because the altitude had yet to affect us. Fast-forward three four hours, I was plagued with a most painful headache and some bowl issues, which I am glad to say are no more. After entering the front door of the hostel, we were shocked to see a beautiful quart yard in front of us. This was by far the nicest hostel I had ever stayed in. Immediately we were given lunch, which consisted of vegetable soup and a chicken a rice dish. We explored Cusco for about an hour and a half and then returned for dinner, form which I excused myself to lay in bed and pass out.
