From SATA-Peru-2007

Off to Lima today!

We had our last breakfast at the good ol’ CBC and then said goodbye to everyone there before taking off for the airport by taxi at 9:00. While at the airport, we ran into our old friend Alcides from Azul Wasi, who was on patrol because the Peruvian president was coming to Cusco. We took off at about noon and arrived in Lima about an hour later. We had a 45 minute bus ride to our hotel, the Monte Real, which turned out to be the same one that we stayed at when we previously passed through Lima.

By this time we were all pretty hungry, and we got some money to go to wherever we wanted. As for my buddy Mike and I, we were both of the same mind, and headed straight for Burger King and ordered the biggest burgers our budget would allow, some fries, and a Pepsi. After this beautifully American meal, we headed for Dunkin Donuts just around the corner for a couple of donuts for dessert. Our taste buds and tummies were undoubtedly overwhelmed, with probably triple the amount of saturated fat we have had in the past three and a half months ingested in less than ten minutes. Oh well, it was worth it.

We hung out for the rest of the afternoon and evening, exploring our little part of the city (we’re in the Miraflores section) and of course checking out the beach, which is only 5 minutes away by foot. The weather’s beautiful: sunny and 70s with clear skies. After checking out the shoreline and ocean from bluffs high above the water below, watching the surfers ride the waves, and taking in the sun set over the Pacific beachside, we headed back to the hotel to meet up for dinner.

The restaurant we went to for dinner was a short walk away and was gorgeous. The menus were essentially hard-cover picture books with an outstanding selection of sevicche, seafood, and other savory dishes. Everyone was happy with what they ordered and a good time was had by all. A few of us walked around the area a bit after dinner, but everyone headed back to the hotel relatively early to get a good night’s sleep for a busy day of museum visiting and city touring tomorrow…
