From SATA-Peru-2007

Despite being Sunday, this morning had a fairly early start. Today was our first day actually working at Azul Wasi, which we initially went to just check it out on Friday. We started helping out by quite literally getting our hands dirty. The project that they are currently working on is creating a well, something which has to be completed before they are allowed to bring kids in to live there. For the most part we were in an assembly line, passing buckets of water and mud, emptying out the parts of the well that had already been built with cement, and making way for it to sink further into the ground so that they could continue adding layers of cement on top. At the end of our time today, even though we had only put in a few hours of work, they told us that we had done what would have taken them days – a pretty good thing to hear. Back next Saturday!

When we got back in the van, instead of taking us right back to the hotel, Alcides (the police officer who started the project) drove us around to see some different places in the area. We went through one town to see some of the homes, many made from bricks of mud, and made stops when Alcides saw other police he knew from the area, etc. We also stopped in one small town for some ice cream and homemade yogurt, with some deviations in flavors from what we were used to. It seems that people have really been missing dairy!

After finally leaving there, we stopped to see some ruins that we were driving past, and at various other spots that seemed to have a good view or be of interest to us. Overall, it was a great day! Hopefully those who weren’t able to make it out this time will be with us next weekend. Tomorrow, back to classes, and the first Quecheua class!
