Sharing purchased music from iTMS

Tests performed with a song purchased from iTMS and now in the host iTunes, m4p extension.

  1. Test One
    1. Put song in Playlist, set playlist to share with no password
    2. When remote client clicks on song, in their Shared Music in iTunes, it asks for authorization to play, with reminder only 5 computers can be authorized to play.
    3. Same result if password is required for the playlist
  2. Test Two
    1. Found audio file in iTMS music folder, m4p extension
    2. Opened in QuickTime Player Pro, Saved As a new .mov. Could not export (Dialog grayed out)
    3. Put movie in a Podcast, client asked for authorization to play.
  3. Test Three
    1. Copied and moved the audio .mov to a PC
    2. Opened in QT Player, was asked for authorization
  4. Test Four
    1. Tried to convert m4p to mp3, could not, got warning "...could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats"
  5. Test Five
    1. Tried to burn m4p to MP3 CD, could not, got warning "...an iTunes Music Store File cannot be burned to an MP3 CD."
  6. Test Six
    1. Burned m4p to Audio CD on a Mac from iTunes. This creates a 16 bit stereo, 44.1 KHz file (Redbook Audio) from the 128 kbps, 44.1 KHz AAC stereo file.
    2. Brought CD to a PC, imported audio track into iTunes, DRM appears gone
    3. However, audio was recompressed to AAC for the second time, not sure how much quality suffered. (NOTE: try changing Advanced>Import settings)
    4. Imported file moved from PC to Mac, DRM appears gone
    5. Could not see audio file on Audio CD on the PC. Could see the file on the Mac.
    6. Moved the audio file from the Audio CD to desktop on the Mac, no recompression (still 16 bit 44.1 KHz though), seems DRM is gone.
  7. Test Seven
    1. Burned m4p to CD as a Data CD from iTunes on a Mac. This creates an m4p file on the disc.
    2. Put CD on a PC, converted m4p to .mov with QuickTime Player Pro, PC client asked for computer authorization in iTunes to play the movie in QT Player.
