  4. iTunes Music Store Card
  5. AV Cable
  6. MIcrophone (not yet available)

Hands-on: Intro to iPod and iTunes

(Frank)

  1. Update computer to latest iTunes/QuickTime
  2. Unpack iPod.
  3. Using iTunes: iTunes is needed in most cases to add, delete, and synchronize the music and video to the iPod.
  4. Connect your iPod to the computer. It will ask you to name your iPod. Select a short name, preferably one or two words. The iPod can be renamed at a later time. This first connection will link your specific iPod to this computer.
  5. Note your serial number, 5 ways to do it http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60978. (Pass out a sheet for recording serial numbers?)
  6. Configure your iTunes iPod preferences. Select the iPod icon (fourth from lower right). Select "Manually Manage Songs and Playlists". Select, below it, "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached", "Enable disk use", and "Display album artwork".
  7. For most of the other Preferences, the defaults are fine.
  8. Explain iTunes Sources panel: Library, Podcasts, Videos, Music Store, Purchased, iPod icon
  9. Disconnecting the iPod- If the "Do not disconnect" warning is displayed on the iPod, do not disconnect. Perform one of the following:
    1. In iTunes, in the left hand Source panel, select the iPod icon, and click on the up arrow next to it.
    2. In iTunes, in the left hand Source panel, select the iPod icon, and click on the eject arrow in the lower right panel of iTunes
    3. On a Mac or PC, if the iPod is mounted as a drive, eject it as you would any other drive

Copying audio and video to the iPod

(Marisa)

  1. Buy a song from iTunes Music Store (iTMS) and copy it to your iPod.
  2. Copy audio from a CD to iTunes, and then to the iPod, directions here
  3. Subscribe to a Podcast, move it to your iPod
  4. Show Audiobooks available from the iTMS or http://www.audible.com
  5. Download a song, put it in iTunes, and then in your iPod
  6. Download a video, put it in iTunes, and then in your iPod
  7. Organize your music and videos in iTunes with folders and playlists.
  8. Can Shain Library place Audiobooks on reserve?

More Advanced Issues

  1. Images in the iPod
    1. Synchronize to a folder on your computer
    2. Synchronize from iPhoto (Mac) or Elements (PC)
    3. More details in Apple Technote
  2. Notes in the iPod
    1. Drag a text-only .txt file into the iPod/Notes folder on the desktop. You can group notes into individual folders
    2. For a free sample of downloadable notes, go to http://www.ipreppress.com/Pages/Reference/MWPocket.htm
    3. The iPod can hold 1,000 text files. Only the first 4,000 characters are shown for each note.
  3. Backing up your iTunes Library
    1. On a Mac, back up your /Users/Your User Name/Music/iTunes folder.
    2. On a PC, back up your /D/Documents and Settings/Your User Name/My Documents/My Music/iTunes folder
    3. Another method at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392
    4. Note-there is an easier way to back up your library in iTunes 7, just go to File>Back Up to Disc

Solving iPod problems

  1. Restart the computer
  2. Reset the iPod (does not erase anything)
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
  3. Restore the iPod. This will erase everything on it. Done with the iPod Updater http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/. This can be used to either update the iPod software, or fully erase and restore the iPod.

Podcasting

(Frank)

  1. Register QuickTime Player to make it the Pro version
  2. Creating a simple podcast
    1. Connect the Plantronics USB headset into the computer.
    2. The microphone may be muted (red light on). Un-mute it (red light off).
    3. Open QuickTime Player Pro to record your podcast.
    4. Select the recording settings.
      1. On a Mac, go to the menu: QuickTime>Preferences>Recording. Select: Microphone>Plantronics Headset, Quality: Good (Note: audio quality is the same in the Good and Better settings).
      2. On a PC, go to Edit>Preferences>Player Preferences>Audio Recording. Select: Microphone: Sound recording: Plantronics Headset. Format:QuickTime Movie (.mov)
    5. Close the Preferences. Go to File>New Audio Recording. When you speak in the microphone, you should see the signal meter work. Try to be at least at 50% strength, without going into the red. (Control of the record volume must be done in the QT or System preferences.)
    6. Click the record button, start speaking. Click the record button again when you are done. Your file will be automatically named.
    7. If you want to edit the file, you can perform simple deletion and cropping with QT Player Pro, using the selection points. If you do this, save the file as a new self-contained file. Use short file names, only letters and numbers. Use the .mov extension.
    8. Go to http://video.conncoll.edu, click on Podcast Server
    9. Click on your podcast and log in. If you need to start one, contact Frank Fulchiero
    10. Click on New Entry, and then the Advanced button. The podcast name is at the top, give the new item a title. Choose the file to upload. Ignore the Trackback URL. Enter a comment in the box, this will show up in iTunes under Description. When you click Save, the file will be uploaded to your podcast.
    11. To subscribe to the podcast, click on the button at the bottom of the page. Anyone that has subscribed to this podcast will automatically receive the new file whey they update their iTunes podcasts.
    12. This interface is mostly administrative. To provide the podcast URL to clients, move the mouse button over the subscribe icon, and copyt the URL in the Status Bar. This button can also be located on any web page.
    13. To subscribe manually, in iTunes, go to Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast, and enter the above URL.
    14. To sync the podcast to the iPod, connect the iPod to a computer, and drag the podcast from iTunes to the iPod

iPod Info

Podcasts

  1. If you create a podcast with both audio and video files, here is how they will exhibit on the iPod.
    1. In Music>Podcasts>Your Podcast, you will see all the items. The movies will have a small screen icon next to them. If you play the movies here, you will hear the audio, but not see the video. Audio-only movies will play fine.
    2. If you go to Video>Video Podcasts, you will see the video listed, but none of the audio files. From here, the video will play both video and audio.
    3. Thus, one podcast is split into a video and an audio one.
  2. Podcasts are automatically updated

Playlists

  1. I don't think that playlists can be automatically updated. But need to research (Frank)
  2. If a Playlist is created in iTunes, with both audio and video, and it's moved to the iPod, this is what happens:
    1. In Music>Playlists>Your Playlist, you will only see the audio files. The video files are not visible. Audio-only movies are visible and can be played.
    2. In Videos>Video Playlists>Your Playlist, the entire playlist will show, both video and audio, and you can play the entire list from here.
  3. If the playlist was created in iTunes from items in a podcast, and the playlist is moved to the iPod, the podcast, with only the specific item will show up on the iPod. Thus, any songs will show up both on the playlist and in the podcast.

Clearly, there will be file management issues that will need to be resolved to minimize confusion in file distribution and aggregation. (Frank)
