DVD-R Recording

From Acorn

These directions are for creating simple dubs, from your miniDV tape to DVD-video, without editing or titles. Following are different approaches. The first time you do this, it may be easier if you do it with Jeff or Frank:

Using the Philips DVD-R Recorder (DVDR 3475)

This is located near the Mac labeled "ATL3" in the Advanced Technology Lab (Shain Library). It uses DVD-R and DVD+R media, which can be purchased from Media Services for $1/disc. Use DVD-R if available. The unit also records to DVD-RW and DVD+RW media, but these are less reliable on playback.

1. Turn on TV monitor, set to input "A"

2. Turn recorder on, you should see the "Philips" screensaver on the televison.

3. With the recorder remote, using the Source button, select E1 (Rear)

3. Turn on the miniDV tape deck. Insert the tape you wish to dub in the tape deck, and play back a little video. You should see the video and hear the audio on the TV.

5. Stop the tape deck, and cue the tape to a few seconds before the part you want to start dubbing.

6. Place a blank DVD-R or DVD+R in the recorder, wait until the display indicates it is finished loading.

7. Keep hitting the REC.MODE button on the remote, until the screen displays SP(2 hr). This will also be displayed on the recorder as "2:00:00". If you need longer recording times, set them now.

8. Start playing your tape, and push the Record button on the recorder, or on the remote, when you want to start recording. The red recorder light on the deck should go on.

9. You can pause the recording using the PAUSE button on the remote, while you cue to another point on the tape. Press the REC button on the remote to continue recording. This will keep all your recorded video in one chapter.

10. When you are done recording, press the STOP button. Wait for the data to write to disc. You will then see the DVD menu, with a blank chapter for future recording. At this time, the disc will ONLY play on this DVD recorder.

11. To play the disc on any other DVD player, or computer with DVD-video drive, it must be finalized.

12. To finalize the disc, use the remote. First, press STOP, you should see a blue screen.

13. Press the SETUP button on the remote, then use the arrow keys on the remote to navigate to "Disc Edit", and select it.

14. You should now be in the "Disc Edit" screen. Use the remote arrow key to go to "Finalize", select "Yes", and then "OK". Finalizing may take up to 20 minutes. A shorter recording period on the disc will require a longer finalizing time. Do not interrupt finalizing or the disc will not work.

15. You can add additional video chapters to the DVD before finalizing, as follows:

a. Use the remote to select the "Empty Title" in the DVD disc menu. You may have to select, on the remote, the STOP and then the DISC MENU buttons to reach this.
b. Once selected, you will see the "Overwrite" choice in the Empty Title. Select this, with the OK button on the remote. This will place the recorder in the Record/Pause mode.
c. Start playing your video from the camcorder, when you want to start recording, hit the REC button.
d. Here again, you can pause the recorder without starting another chapter.
e. When you hit the STOP button, you will end the new chapter, and create a new EMPTY TITLE.
f. This process can be repeated many times, to create up to 99 separate chapters.

Using iDVD, One-Step DVD

This method will dub your entire tape, from start to finish (or the first video break), to DVD, without menus, as one chapter. The disc will autoplay, or start playing as soon as inserted in a DVD player or computer with DVD-video drive. Three Macs in the ATL have miniDV decks and iDVD.

1. Tun on the miniDV deck next to the computer, turn on the TV monitor. Select Input "B" on the monitor, select F1 input on the deck, push and turn the scroll wheel on the right. (directions on top of monitor).

2. Put your tape in the miniDV deck. You should be able to play and view your tape now.

1. Open iDVD, if it opens in someone else's project, go to File>Close Window, and select OneStep DVD.

2. Insert a DVD-R in the drive when the dialog box requests it.

3. When the drive bay closes, the camera will automatically rewind to the beginning of the tape.

4. At this time, it will start playing the tape, and automatically record it to the computer.

5. When the recording is finished, or when you either stop the tape deck or select "Stop" in iDVD, the video will be automatically compressed and written to the DVD-R. Any interruption in the video signal will start the writing process.

Using Toast Titanium 8

This method provides more flexibility than using iDVD's OneStep DVD. It allows you to create separate chapters, and each chapter can have its own start and end points.

1. Tun on the miniDV deck next to the computer, turn on the TV monitor underneath it. Select Input "B" on the monitor, select F1 input on the deck. (directions on top of monitor).

2. Put your tape in the miniDV deck. You should be able to play and view your tape now.

3. Open Toast Titanium (located in the dock). In the left menu, select DVD-Video.

4. In Options, select Menu Style Corporate (or any other).

5. If you select "Auto-play disc on insert", this will happen when you will play the DVD. If not selected, the DVD will go to the main menu on insert, and is usually preferable.

6. If you select "Play all items continuously", each chapter will automatically play after the previous one. Decide how you want the DVD to play.

7. Use Automatic Encoding, Good video quality is usually adequate and is faster than higher quality levels.

7. Toast should recognize the miniDV deck. A small controller will appear in Toast, and can be used to shuttle back and forth on the tape. Cue the tape, and when you hit the import button, select Import Entire Tape, even if you do not plan to. The import for each chapter can be stopped anytime. Select "Import from Current Position". If the controler does not appear, check the deck settings, and try to turn it on and off.

8. When you are done importing your clips, double click on each one to rename them, and select the Button Picture. If you have several chapters on the DVD, it may be better not to create more, so set DVD Chapters to None.

9. You can rearrange the order of your chapters by dragging them up and down. You can also select them and delete them.

9. When you are ready to burn, make sure the format above the Red Button in the lower right is set to "DVD", and click the Red Button. Insert your media, and the files will be compressed and burned.

10. You will be able to add more clips to your DVD project later, even after burning a DVD, if you save it. Please save all your work in the ED DEPT folder on the main hard drive (in Macintosh HD/Users/student/ED DEPT). Open the project, and turn the miniDV deck on and off, Toast will recognize it.

For editing, titles, voiceovers, music tracks

In these cases you need to capture and edit the video in iMovie, then export to iDVD. Please see Jeff Gada (jmgad@conncoll.edu, x2698) or Frank Fulchiero (fful@conncoll.edu, x5006) for instruction and assistance.
