  3. Small Tripod
  4. USB cable
  5. AC adapter (with detatchable cord)
  6. Mic-stand to Edirol Adapter (also connects to protective case)
  7. Headphones
  8. Manual (with insert)

Simple Instructions, for recording one or two voices:

  1. Place Edirol in case, screw on tripod, extend legs.
  2. For best results, record in a quiet room. Place the unit within 2', and as perpendicular as possible, to voices.
  3. Hold down power button until unit goes on.
  4. Hold down the REC button. This will start flashing, and puts the unit in record-pause. It will not start recording, but allows you to adjust recording levels.
  5. Start speaking while looking at the VU meter. Ideally, the signal will be at least 12 dB. Use the Input Level (+) and (-) buttons on the left side to control the recording volume. If the red PEAK light goes on, the recording volume is too high.
  6. Usually, for one or two voices, you will increase the recording volume to the maximum setting (30).
  7. When you are ready to start recording, push the flashing REC button again. It will now stay solid red, and start recording. You will see the time display advancing.
  8. To pause a recording, push the Pause (||) button on top of the REC button. The REC button will start flashing.
  9. To end a recording, push the square stop button under the REC button.
  10. To hear the recording, plug the headphones in the jack on the right. Push the Play button, on top of the REC button. You can adjust playback volume with the Volume (+) and (-) buttons below the headphone jack.
  11. Every time you stop a recording, and start a new one, a new file will be created. The names of the files are at the top of the display. To select a different file, use the forward and back buttons.
  12. When you are done recording, press and hold the POWER button to turn the unit off. The unit will turn off after 10 minutes of no activity.
  13. Battery charge is indicated by a small icon in the lower right of the display, when the unit is on. A totall white icon means fully charged. Batteries are good for about 4 hours of recording and 5.5 hours of playback. For long recordings or playback, use the AC adapter if possible. Tund the unit off before connecting and disconnecting the AC adapter.

Moving the files to a computer:

  1. Turn on the R-09, make sure you are on the main screen.
  2. Carefully slide back, half way, the bottom cover, to expose the USB port. Do not try to flip the cover outward.
  3. Connect the R-09 with the included cable to a USB port on the computer.
  4. The display on the R-09 will indicate "USB Storage".
  5. The R-09 will mount as an external drive. It wil show up on the desktop as "NO NAME" on a Mac, and as "Removable Disk" in My Computer on a PC.
  6. Copy the songs to the computer by dragging them from the R-09 to your desktop, or a folder.
  7. Unmount the R-09 before disconnecting. On a Mac, drag the "NO NAME" icon to the trash, this will turn into the eject icon. On a PC, go to the bottom right task bar, and select Safely Remove Hardware icon, and then the USB device.
  8. Disconnect the USB cable, and gently close the sliding door.

Recorder Management

  1. The unit will be provided configured for normal voice recordings. For other audio sources, please ask for assistance, or refer to the manual.
  2. To enter the settings menu, press down and hold the Finder/Menu button until Menu is displayed.
  3. The recorder is set to record in the uncompressed WAV format, 44.1 KHz, 16 bit stereo audio. This is best for most applications.
  4. At the above settings, it will record 180 minutes on the 2 GB memory card. You may borrow additional cards, if needed.
  5. Longer recording times are possible with the mp3 recording settings, up to 1,990 minutes on one 2 GB card.

Opening the bottom cover (a tricky procedure!):

  1. This allows access to the memory card, batteries, and USB port.
  2. The bottom cover is delicate, please be careful when opening it.
  3. Carefully slide the cover back half way to expose the memory card and USB port. Do not push more than half-way back! Do not pull out! There should not be any reason to remove the card, but if it is re-inserted, ensure the front of the card matches the front of the recorder, or there will be damage. Please refer to the manual for removing and reinserting the card.
  4. To replace the batteries (2 AA), the cover needs to be slid back more than half way. Push the small "Battery" button to the left, while you are doing this, slide the cover itself back some more, it will then flip out. Please observer the battery polarity.

The above are basic directions to get you started. For futher assistance, contact Frank Fulchiero (fful@conncoll.edu, x5006) or refer to the manual.
