Help

From Acorn

A wiki can handle complex html, but it's better to use simple wiki markup so that anyone can make edits. A lot of html code will also slow down a wiki. Wikis are designed more for information sharing and ease of updating than "coffee-table" pretty pages.

First of all you can type without any markups, and it will be displayed. If you want a carriage return to show in the wiki, enter two carriage returns in the edit page.

Wiki markup (wikitext) creates the formatting below. Log into your wiki wiki, click on the edit tab, and format text using the toolbar, or by typing wikitext tags directly. Don't forget to click the "Save Page" button. Only one person can edit the same page at the same time.

  • An asterisk before the text makes a little box

two apostrophes on each side of text: creates italics

three apostrophes on each side of text: creates bold

five apostrophes on each side of text: creates bold italics

A colon before the sentence indents it 5 spaces.
Two colons indent the sentence 10 spaces.

four dashes makes the long line above, for separating content

Two brackets before and after any words: [[Creates a new Page]] with that title, and also creates a link to it. You can’t change the name later, so think twice about the title. You can move pages to a page with a new name by using the “move” tab, but it’s better to create a new page with the name you want, and copy/paste the text from the unwanted page name to the second, changing any existing links. Only the administrators can delete pages.

If the page is already created, the bracketed words will take you to it: Creates a new Page.

To link to a URL outside the wiki, type the URL, then a space, and then the link name you want to be visible, all inside a single set of brackets: Connecticut College

You can also write just the URL: http://www.conncoll.edu

A little box with an arrow after a link indicates that it is an external link.

MediaWiki automatically capitalizes the first letter of a page, this bug should be fixed in a future upgrade.

COMMENTING FOR FEEDBACK:

One space before the text puts a box around it.
  • Use the Discussion tab at the top, the page itself is in the "Article" tab. The Discussion tab is not visible unless you are logged in as a user, the general public will not see anything here.

Contents

SECTIONS

Two equal signs on each side of words make a section header, as in this example: ==SECTIONS==

Creating high-level sections is a good way to organize a wiki page, each section can later be filled in and edited.

Once you have four sections, a table of contents will automatically be created above the first section.

Each section has its own "edit" link at the right. This makes it easy to edit long wiki pages.

To remove the edit link, write __NOEDITSECTION__ at the top of the page.

Three equals makes subsection

The above was generated with the follwing code: ===Three equals makes subsection===

Four equals makes a sub-subsection

Fful If you type three tildes after some text, it will insert your user name: Fful

If you type four tildes, it will insert your name, date, and time: Fful 10:53, 18 July 2007 (EDT)

If you type five tildes, it will insert only the date and time: 10:53, 18 July 2007 (EDT)

A little more advanced:

  • one asterisk makes top topic
    • two asterisks makes subtopic
    • another subtopic

A new line ends above series

  1. Pound sign makes numbered list
    1. Two pound signs makes a sublist
    2. Next two pound signts continue it
  2. This is the second single pound sign in the list
    1. Two pound signs
    2. Two more pound signs

Messaging:

Go to Special Pages>User List. Click on a user. Click the discussion tab, and leave a message. The next time the user logs in, they will have an alert saying “you have new messages”

Table of Contents (TOC)

A TOC is added automatically as soon as you have more than three headers. To add one with fewer than four headers, type __FORCETOC__ anywhere on the page or __TOC__ at the position where you want to have the TOC.

To remove a table of contents from a page, add __NOTOC__ to anywhere on the page. The __ character before the commands is two _ characters together

Remember, anything you have written on a page, and saved, in the past can be seen by using the "history" tab. The System Administrator can delete an entire page, including its history.

RSS feed

You can subscribe to an RSS feed for any wiki, to be automatically notified of changes. Log into the wiki, go to Special Pages in the Toolbox. Click on Recent changes.

You will now see an rss and an atom link in the toolbox.

Click on either one of these. You will be taken to the rss feed for the wiki.

Depending on your browser, you will be able to subscribe either from here, or you can copy/paste the URL into your feed reader.
