Image Manipulation

  1. Ensure your image file and Word document are available on the computer.
  2. Open Photoshop.
  3. Go to File>Open. Find your image and click “Open”.
  4. Save a copy and keep the original in case you make a mistake. Go to File>Save As, give the file the same name with "copy" on the end, save as JPEG, Maximum Quality 12. Work only on the copy.
  5. Select the Crop tool, make a selection. This can be changed by dragging the small boxes.
  6. Hit Enter to crop.
  7. Go to Image>Image Size. Select:
    1. Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions
    2. Resample Image: Bicubic Sharper
    3. Resolution: 150 dpi
    4. Document height: 5”
  8. Use the magnifying glass to zoom in and out, if needed.
  9. Go to Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast. Adjust these.
  10. Go to Filter>Sharpen if you think it will help
  11. Save as “your-image-name-b.jpg”, quality High. Do not overwrite the original file.
  12. Open Microsoft Word 2007.
  13. In Office Button>Open, open your document, place the cursor in the location you want to insert your image
  14. Go to Insert>Picture, find your image, and insert.
  15. Right-click on picture, go to Format Picture, Layout>Square, Alignment Center.
  16. Additional resizing can be done in Word.
  17. When you are done, save your document, (make sure it’s a Word 2003 “doc” and not a “docx” extension)
  18. Save another copy as a PDF, go to Office Button>Save As>Adobe PDF. Remember where you are saving your file!
