PICASA For personal computer image management on Windows

  1. Download from http://picasa.google.com/
  2. Install. When asked, set it to only scan “My Documents, etc…”
  3. Create a folder, or folders, to organize your images. It is easier to initially create these from outside Picasa. For example: C:\Documents and Settings\fful\My Documents\DELI, with some subfolders: camera imports, picasa exports, library
  4. In Picasa, go to Tools>Folder Manager. Here you will see all the folders in your hard drive. Select “Scan Always” for your DELI folder. Deselect everything else.
  5. Go to Tools>Options. In General, set Save Imported Pictures In to DELI/camera imports folder. In File Types, select All.

Some things you can do:

  1. Import images from camera, if you want. You can create a new folder before importing, from within Picasa.
  2. View your images in other watched folders, i.e.: manually dragged from camera to folders.
  3. Manage: move images to another folder, rename files. This actually happens also on the hard drive.
  4. Picasa automatically updates when folder contents change, or when new folders are added or deleted in DELI
  5. Non-destructive image editing, the original can be restored
  6. Save edited images to a new folder, without deleting or changing the original.
  7. Create labels (keywords), these automatically create and update new albums. Only one label possible per image?
  8. Don't think comments are possible.
  9. Create captions
  10. Create slideshows

Other things you may be able to do, but there may be better solutions (not fully evaluated)

  1. Export to web
  2. Back up images to CD or another hard drive

Notes

  1. Picasa online help is pretty good
  2. Picasa now has Web Albums available for both PCs and Macs.
