Quick-Start

From Acorn

A. TEXT

Log in to the wiki, and click the edit button at the top of the page. Just start writing. Anything you write can be changed later.

If you want to start a new line, use two carriage returns. Click the "Save Page" button at the bottom.

For formatting text, you can use wikitalk, or select the text and use the toolbar at the top of the edit section.

For bold text, use three apostrophes at each end of the text. Use the single apostrophe character to create these.

For italics, use two apostrophes at each end.

For Bold italic, use five apostrophes on each end.

To indent text, use a colon before the text. This will indent it 5 spaces.
If you use two colons, the text will be indented 10 spaces.
  • For a bullet, use an asterisk
If you have a space before your text, it will create a box around it.

To copy and paste text from a Microsoft Word document, create two carriage returns between each paragraph, or you will have one long run-on sentence. This can always be corrected later.

Four dashes will create a line, as below:

B. LINKS

To create a new page, type two open and two closed brackets around the page name: [[New Page]]

When clicked, this will also create a link to the new page: New Page, you can then start typing.

To go to an existing page, also use two open and two closed brackets around the page name, as above.

There are three ways to link to an external web site (URL)

1. Just type the URL: http://www.conncoll.edu
2. Type the URL inside one set of brackets: [http://www.conncoll.edu], which will look like this: [1]
3. Type the URL, then a space, then the name you want displayed, inside one set of brackets:
[http://www.conncoll.edu Connecticut College], this will look like this: Connecticut College

C. IMAGES

  • After logging in, you can upload an image using the "Upload File" button in the left toolbar.
  • The image should be a JPG, GIF or PNG file. The name should have no spaces, use only letters, numbers, dashes and underlines in the name. Give it the correct extension: .jpg, .gif or .png. Make sure it's not too large (see the Images Help in the sidebar for details).
  • After you upload the image, a wiki page will be created for it.
  • To use the image, use this syntax: [[Image:Rose.jpg]] . This will insert the image in the page:

Image:Rose.jpg

For different ways of justifying the image, resizing it, and wrapping text around it, see "Images Help" in the sidebar.

If you are going to change image styles on one page you may get strange layouts. Insert the following line after each style to avoid this (note: you can copy and paste this):

<br style="clear:both" />

D. SECTIONS

Contents

Two equal signs create a section

This makes it easier to edit a long page, as each section has its own "Edit" button on the side.

Here is another section

This section also has its own edit button.

Third section

The formatting before and after the text is called wikitalk. There are about 10 wikitalk symbols.

Fourth section

When you have fours sections, a table of contents is automatically generated at the top of the first section.
