Scanning
From Acorn
Image scanning
This can be performed at several locations on campus:
- The PC Electronic Classroom, in the lower level of Shain Library (Windows computers, but can be booted into OSX)
- Neff Lab, the lower level of Shain (Mac OSX computers)
- Advanced Technology Lab (ATL), lower level of Shain Library (Windows and Macs)
- Digital Curriculum Center (DCC), in Blaustein 108 (Windoes and Macs)
- Visual Resources Library (VRL), in Cummings Arts Center (Macs)
The following locations also have slide scanners: Advanced Technology Lab, Digital Curriculum Center and Visual Resources Library.
Scanning to PDF files (as bitmapped images)
In addition to a scanner, the application Adobe Acrobat Pro needs to be installed on the computer. This is found in all the above locations. On a Mac, the PDF can also be created by the operating system, in the Print command.
Note: On Mac OSX 10.4, images in PDFs can be compressed, but the compression parameters cannot be controlled, like they can when using Acrobat Pro with Distiller.
Scanning to Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
In addition to a scanner, an OCR application is required. Although OCR is built into Acrobat, it generally is not very accurate, unless the page is a computer printout. OmniPage Pro does a much better job. This is installed on a PC in the ATL, and a PC in the DCC. The final output can be a plain text file, a Microsoft Word document, or a text-based PDF file.
