Videoconferencing
From Acorn
Thanks to a grant received by Bridget Baird, the Dilley Room in Shain Library has been configured as the college's first videoconferencing room. Prof. Baird has taught a class using this technology in Spring 2006. Jonathan McLean is the college's first student videoconferencing technician. Bill Constantakos, in the IS Technical Suport Team, was responsible for setting up a new subnet to Internet2. Dave Baratko, Jeff Gada, Ozgur Izmirly, Frank Fulchiero and Physical Plant rounded out the team that made it happen.
Videoconferencing has migrated from the older H.320 to the newer H.323 standard. H.320 works over ISDN lines, H.323 works over IP networks, and the internet. The standard also allows a second stream, H.329, which support VGA video at 1024x768, at 5-10 frames/second.
The Dilley Room features a Polycom VSX-7000e rack-mounted unit, two cameras, 42" and a 50" gas-plasma displays, and an LCD projector with a 6' screen. The LCD projector can display either the near end or the far end computer content.
We have an older Polycom ViewStation H.323 in the Digital Curriculum Center (DCC). It has been used for three years, and works well.
DCC Videoconferencing Instructions (need minor revisons for new cart)
The DCC portable videoconferencing equipment can be moved to Blaustein 203, 210, and 212, More information here

BL203--Podium is stereo male 1/8", male VGA. S-video and composite inputs do not work in podium. Without panning, we can cover: 3 seats in first row, 4 in second, 5 in third, 6 in fourth.
BL210--Needed to connect Mini to podium...8-10'. Podium has stereo male 1/8" and male VGA. Need gender changer to go to female for VGA in podium.
If unit is placed agains stage, here is how many seats can be covered without panning: no-one in first row, 4 in second, 5 in third, 7 in fourth, 7-8 in fifth. Fifth row does not see monitor that well.
BL212--with no pan, full view of only end 4 chairs, when unit is by blackboard. Can crowd 5 people...with two rows of people, you can have 10. With panning, and all sitting around the tables, you can cover 10-11 people, all except the two end tables near the TV,
